Checking on a herd of deer recently brought to large corral located several miles outside of the village of Mekoryuk. Beyond the dark line of reindeer is the frozen Bering Sea appearing not much different than the land. A land/seascape of white on white. January 16, 2004

1986 Nunivak Island.
A pair of water rounded rocks nested into the tundra at an abandoned village named Cingigmiut on the east coast of Nunivak Island.
The rocks, larger than bowling balls were placed long ago, possibly as memorials to specific individuals or as grave markers.
In the left-side image on the upper right is a grassy area that marks the location of the old village habitation area. The site was first visited ("discovered") by Russian navigators in 1822. Beyond lies the waters of Akulurar, renamed Etolin Strait by the Russians.
