On the picket line.

I have read here on Flickr and other places that a dog should never be on a chain. The people who write such things are well meaning and concerned about the general welfare of dogs, however I suspect they have never owned a working husky.

This photo was taken just before Alder and Shusanas' first run of the season. They are somewhere they have never been before and they are about to run with a team of dogs they have never run with before.

This cable line they are on is in a staging area, if you could see behind them you would see the trailhead with the sled waiting. They are the first on the line and are looking intently with curiosity and anticipation in the direction of Kira and Scott as they bring other members of the team.

The picket line is for the safety and well-being of the sled dogs, soon enough they will be heading down the trail and doing what they love to do.

I am unable to run dogs because of my shoulder so am very grateful that my friends can run my dogs. Afterwards we received a very favorable report on Shush and Alder, which in some ways isn't surprising, but also it is reassuring to know that they can so easily and joyfully adapt to the new situation and personalities.

Five years old. Her third year with me. Shy with people, motivated and focused in team.

Laura Neese and her team of 14 Alaskan Huskies from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are staying with us and living in the BeingThere Dog Village for a couple of weeks as they prepare for the 1000 mile Yukon Quest sled international dog race that begins on February 6th.

The race runs from Fairbanks Alaska to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory Canada. We’re very excited to be hosting Laura, her handler Jim and 14 beautiful, young and strong Alaskan Huskies. More pics and info to follow, for sure.

Here is a link to Laura’s profile on the Yukon Quest website: www.yukonquest.com/race-central/yukon-quest-1000-mile/mus...

Population explosion!
We have an influx of 14 young dogs in the BeingThere dog village these days, temporarily bringing our total to 25. It hasn’t been too disruptive and our elders are taking it in stride. Along with the dogs are Laura Neese and her handler Jim. They are from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and are staying with us as they prepare for the 1000 mile, international Yukon Quest sled dog race, which begins in Fairbanks on February 6th. To put it mildly, we’re quite excited and it’s a joy to have Laura, Jim and the dogs staying with us.

There is a neat Flickr connection here. Laura is originally from Newark Ohio and her sister Erin is a wonderful photographer. Laura and Erin saw my sled dog and mushing photos several years ago and we quickly became friends. Lenore and I visited them at their home in Newark back in 2011. They are a part of a great family and we are looking forward to Laura’s parents joining us next week, as they will be handling for her during this 1000 mile adventure.

Forgot to mention the dog in front there is named Maple, she's absolutely gorgeous and Laura's best leader.
