Nicely constructed traditional wooden sled.

We see less and less of this and more plastics and metals in modern sleds. I have a couple others I will post soon, for those who are interested. The good old sleds were constructed without screws or nails and the joints were made loose to allow for flexibility. The stanchion here is inserted into the false runner by mortise and tenon joint. The colored nylon webbing is the bridle, it runs the length of the sled on both sides and wraps each stanchion, at the front the gangline attaches to the bridle, in this way the sled is pulled from a number of points, distributing the tension evenly.

We think the sled was made by Walter Palkovitch, and was run in the Yukon Quest races in 1998/99.

Front stanchion details.

From bottom to top: plastic runner, wooden runner (probably ash wood), false runner, lashings (nylon), vertical stanchion, brush bow support, bed support crosspiece (mortised through stanchion), bed slats (the two outer slats have a slot for the stanchion to pass through).

We think the sled was made by Walter Palkovitch, and was run in the Yukon Quest races in 1998/99. Truly, a beautifully constructed traditional wooden basket sled.

First run of the new season. Most of our snow melted, but the temps remained fairly cool, right around the freezing mark.
Beluga and Pepsi in lead. (another in comments)
