A&P Tudor Brand Pilsner Beer.

This was my fathers go-to beer. Why? Because it was cheap. He was a depression era kid and didn't spend money frivolously as an adult (this is an understatement). He worked for A&P (The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company) for about 30 years. He was a Union Carpenter in Cleveland local 182. For A&P he worked on just about everything from construction to repairing broken windows, floor tiles, installation of freezers, coolers, and eventually tear outs of old closed up stores. He worked in Northern Ohio and Western Pa. and watched the stores and chain go from state of the art to outdated and broken down. It was kind of sad.

Well, needless to say, my first beer was probably a Tudor. When dad felt like splurging on beer it would be Duke from the old Duquesne Brewing Company of Pittsburgh or Stroh's of Detroit. But for everyday afterwork, or hot, humid Saturday afternoon on the porch after mowing the lawn, there was always a cold can or three of Tudor in the fridge. I was happy to fetch for Dad. "Bobby, how 'bout getting your old man a beer?" We had a little one ounce shot glass that was a miniature beer mug, handle and all. I'd fetch dad's beer and also grab the shot glass, hoping for a taste. Dad would fill it for me and we'd drink up. On rare occasions when he was feeling especially good I might get a second. Mom did not approve.
