The team breaks trail through a blanket of fresh snow. Hidden beneath the snow is a packed trail, knowing where that trail is and keeping on it is a skill we often give over to our lead dogs. Sometimes the musher will break trail by snowshoeing ahead of the team. In either case this is hard work for the dogs and musher alike and requires frequent rest breaks.
