Cape Spencer, Innes National Park SA

Along the rocky path down , pure sands and vegetation lie. Getting down was no problem, getting up was hard work but a deserted beach at sunset? couldn't really ask for more! Recommended way to spend an Easter that's for sure.

View On Black , feel the sand

Innes National Park, SA

Shot taken from the beach at the base of Cape Spencer lighthouse at sunset. It's a long descent along some dodgy surface to the base of this beach but being down there was definitely worth it. The cliffs are high enough to be spectacular but also not unscalable making Innes a unique place for hiking. 3 shot HDR processed in photomatix blended with the -2EV for sky and shadows. As the sands appear, its true appearance can't really be matched on a photo. (resting up tonight - will do a catchup of your pics tomorrow!)

View On Black for seaspray on the lens!

Ethel Beach, South Australia

The Ethel wreckage. The Ethel was a Norwegian boat whose crew attempted a rescue of the flailing 'Ferret' but then ran into difficulties herself. Most of the crew made it ashore when the weather calmed down. Efforts to salvage Ethel also failed resulting in her remnants strewn across this beach. Ethel beach on the southeast coast of Innes National Park is one of the most picturesque locations in the park with sheer cliffs on either side of this stretch of beach.
Image taken at dawn facing west just after dawn in the shadows of the rising sun. Grad filter in the wrong place....

Ardrossan , South Australia

This pretty town on the tip of St Vincent's gulf was established in the late 1800s as a farming community. In the early 1900's a dolomite quarry was opened which necessitated a 1km jetty to load the ships with dolomite and grain alike. We stopped here on the way to Innes National Park for lunch and found that the beach was very attractive at low tide.

Image is a 3 shot HDR processed in photomatix some blending of the +2EV shot in the cliffs.

Innes National Park, Yorke Peninsula

This shot was taken 20 minutes or so after sunset atop a rock that was dry up top but being buffeted by waves. It was at the base of Cape Spencer lighthouse which takes a bit of getting to but well worth the steep climb. .....actually , looking at the versions I think this was just the single shot in the end - longer exposure resulted in whiteness everywhere on the water.

Workflow (now standard for most images I process)
- Exported from lightroom as a 16 bit TIFF (cropping and rotating in lightroom)
- Layer 1: adjustments for levels and shadow highlight
- Layer 2: (duplicate of layer 1) - surface blur for areas that need noise reduction (eg skies, underexposed areas
- Layer 3+: Various colour selection layers for colour balance (in this case, the ocean blues to boost cyan and blue, the sky to boost magenta and red slightly)
- Layer 4: 50% neutral gray overlay layer for dodging and burning and sometimes for enhancing colours.
- Layer 5: High pass filter - around 2-3 pixels on vivid light - this layer gets placed underneath the surface blur layer to avoid sharpening the smoothed bits.
- Image flattened and if needed, lens distortion adjustment for vignetting.
- saved as 8 bit TIFF for printing ,
- resized /bordered/watermarked with actions for flickr /web
