A wide landscape that's getting even wider, little by little.

Believe it or not, you can see two tectonic plates in this image. The Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Partk of Iceland is part of the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which extend the length of the Atlantic from north to south.

The plates are moving apart. That's the reason why we get volcanic fissures every now and then.

This site was home to the world's longest running Parliament, founded in this location in the year 930.

A shield or armor. That's Skjaldbreiður, the dormant (yes!) volcano whose crater you can see in this picture.
It is indeed a shield volcano - that's a type of volcano [íslenska: dyngja]. From the ground, it really looks like a soldier's shield laid down.

I understand it is 1060 m high.

"Skjaldbreiður, Iceland, is eponymous for shield volcanoes" says Wikipedia. This means that this kind of volcano, shield volcano, is named after Skjaldbreiður, in all languages (or most, I guess)

I didn't know that until today !!!!!!!
