An Admiralty Pilot plots a course on a chart during an exercise at Her Majesty's Naval Base Devonport.

The Admiralty Pilots at Plymouth are part of QHM’s (Queen's Harbour Master) organization and are employed to enable QHM to discharge his statutory duties to ensure the safe movement of vessels within the Dockyard Port.
The Admiralty Pilotage Service is geared to provide a round the clock service, every day of the year. The Service provides up to 4 Pilots in the core working week with reduced cover overnight and at the week ends.

The Admiralty Pilots are managed by: the Chief Admiralty Pilot, on behalf of QHM, he allocates Pilots to individual tasks and assists the Movements Officer in the planning of vessel movements in the Port. The Chief Admiralty Pilot is also available for advice on Pilotage, the use of tugs and vessel maneuvering within the Port.

Pilotage for certain vessels using the Port is compulsory, usually larger and deep draught vessels. An Admiralty Pilot on behalf of QHM also controls vessels moved without their own power, commonly known as a “cold move”.

All Pilots have “Command qualifications” and normally three to four years of Pilotage training before qualifying as a full Admiralty Pilot.

Additional services provided by the Admiralty Pilots are Port familiarization runs and Compass Adjusting for RN vessels.

Imam Asim Hafiz, OBE, The Islamic adivisor to the Armed Forces leading the Prayers at the Ministry of Defence Main Building in London.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon launched the country’s first ever Armed Forces Muslim Forum, in partnership with the Muslim community.

On Wednesday 23 July, the Defence Secretary oversaw Iftar, the traditional breaking of the Ramadan fast, to celebrate the new platform that will enhance the partnership between the Muslim community, and the Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces.

The Forum aims to encourage better dialogue and help highlight the crucial role British Muslims play in our Armed Forces both past and present.

At the event, Mr Fallon addressed members of the British Islamic community, thanking them for their commitment to this crucial initiative and reflecting on the contribution of Muslims to the Armed Forces. With the centenary of the First World War just around the corner, the launch of the Forum is a timely and poignant reminder of the enormous contribution and sacrifice made by hundreds of thousands of Muslim troops in 1914.

Also speaking at the event was Imam Asim Hafiz, Islamic adviser to the MoD. Members of the Muslim community contributed too, and their speeches were followed by a call to the Maghrib prayer, before everyone came together for Iftar, the breaking of the fast meal.
