British and French paratroopers are showing their readiness to deploy together on joint operations.
Across two demanding weeks in November, south west France saw Exercise Falcon Amarante testing the Airborne Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (A-CJEF) – a partnership between 16 Air Assault Brigade and 11e Brigade Parachutiste.
The two brigades provide the airborne rapid reaction forces for their respective armies, and the A-CJEF has been trained and ready since 2013 to deploy on short-notice operations ranging from war fighting to disaster relief.
Exercise Falcon Amarante is the A-CJEF’s annual test exercise, taking place in 2018 under 11e BP’s command. Some 650 British troops and 170 vehicles of the 3 PARA Battlegroup - built around the airborne infantry of 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment bolstered by artillery, engineers, medics, signallers and logisticians took part.
British troops were paired with the 3e Regiment de Parachutistes d’Infanterie de Marine as the A-CJEF, with US paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade working alongside it.
After mission planning and reconnaissance, the exercises started in earnest with some 600 British, French and US paratroopers jumping onto the Caylus training area near Toulouse. From there, a series of simulated missions tested the skills and capabilities of the 2,000-strong force.

1 RIFLES soldiers pictured during an exercise on the Sennybridge Training Area.
The First Battalion The Rifles (1 RIFLES) have been Exercising on Sennybridge Training Area, despite the onset of Storm Diana.
1 RIFLES are due to deploy on Op TORAL in 2019, providing mentoring and security in Kabul, Afghanistan.
To prepare for this task the Riflemen, are training hard and practicing working with the Foxhound Vehicles they will be using in Kabul.
1 RIFLES is a Regular Infantry Battalion of around 550 Riflemen.
It is based in Chepstow, Gloucestershire; from where it deploys worldwide on training missions and operations.
Originally within 3 Commando Brigade, 1 RIFLES is now part of 1st (UK) Division - which heads up the British Army's Light Role Adaptable Force, optimised for the challenges of today, both within the UK and abroad.
1 RIFLES are currently ready to deploy as the Vanguard Light Infantry Battalion as a part of a NATO Battlegroup. This means that if a significant international incident requires a NATO response, 1 RIFLES will be amongst the first units within NATO to deploy.
1 RIFLES has recently taken part in exercises in Kenya and Belize and conducted the longest operational tour of Iraq in recent years (18 months). This gave all members of the Battalion to deploy, helping to train the Iraqi Security Forces in their fight against Da’esh.

Pictured is the interior of a Royal Air Force C130J Hercules conducting low-light refuelling with an Airbus Voyager Airtanker during a routine training sortie over the West Coast of England.
The aircraft were taking part in an airborne delivery training sortie that saw them drop two different loads, ranging in weight from 100 kilograms to a tonne, over Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
After completing that part of the sortie, they then linked up to a Voyager to complete some low-light air to air refuelling over the West Coast of England.
The Hercules is the RAF’s primary tactical transport aircraft and in its current C.Mk 4 and C.Mk 5 versions of the C-130J-30 and C-130J, respectively, has been the backbone of UK operational tactical mobility tasks since it was brought into service in 1999.
It is frequently employed to operate into countries or regions where there is a threat to aircraft; its performance, tactics and defensive systems make it the ideal platform for such tasks.
The aircraft is highly flexible, with the ability to airdrop a variety of stores and paratroopers and operate from natural surface landing zones. To conduct these missions, it is vital that Hercules crews are highly skilled in low-level flying.
The aircraft performs in the same roles at night using night-vision goggles (NVGs), while station keeping equipment (SKE) enables it to remain in formation during poor weather.
Long-range capabilities are enhanced with air-to-air refuelling, while the Air Survival Rescue Apparatus may be mounted in the cabin for search and rescue missions, enabling the Hercules to airdrop life rafts and emergency supplies.
