The Netherlands - Ezinge
My photographic project -inspired on publications about the Medieval churches in the provinces Friesland and Groningen by Peter Karstkarel- led me to the Groningen village Ezinge, on Vesper evening. The 13th century church and tower of Ezinge are -as in most cases in the Groningen province- build on a so called wierde (terp, mound), a man-made embankment in the flood-prone countryside. Ezinge is well known for the rich archaeological finds after excavations (1923-1934), revealing a constant habitation since 600 BC and probably earlier. The freestanding church tower is connected to an old schoolbuilding. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands - Winsum
One of those old wierde (terp, mound) villages in the Groningen Province is Winsum, in fact composed out of three wierde villages: Winsum, Obergum and Bellingeweer. Winsum owns two flour mills: De Ster and De Vriendschap. Both lie close to the village centre and canal Winsumerdiep, that separates the original Winsum (left side) and Obergum (right side). Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands - Niehove
Postcard weather conditions on the evening that I visited the well known village Niehove, with its intact, original radial structure. The 13th century church is located in the middle of the wierde (terp. mound) at a height of 3.7 metres (12 ft). There are two ring roads around the centre and the houses and farms were built along the roads. Paths run down the hill like spokes in a wheel. Niehove has been permanently inhabited since at least the 2nd century BC. It used to be known as Suxwort. In the Middle Ages the village was located on the island of Humsterland as a result of the emerging and expanding former Lauwerszee. Nowadays, Niehove lies in the middle of the Groningen polder land, more than 10 km away from the Wadden Sea, and is awarded a protected site. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes
