The Netherlands-Kinderdijk
My first-ever visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site with the windmills near the villages Kinderdijk and Alblasserdam. As an already 67-year old Dutchman, shame on me. These windmills are only a modest remnant of a much larger number of mills, built in the 18th century to drain the polders of a 25.000 ha large area called Alblasserwaard, pretty close to the cities Rotterdam and Dordrecht. Drones are prohibited here, but as always I made my images with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands-Katwijk aan Zee
Morning view on the village Katwijk aan Zee. In Roman times, Katwijk was a place of strategic importance. It was located at the Roman Empire's northern border, at the mouth of the (old) Rhine river, which in Roman times was larger in this area than it is today. There was a good deal of traffic along the Rhine. Katwijk was also a jumping-off point for the voyage to Britain. Built during the reign of Emperor Claudius (41–54), the town's name was Lugdunum Batavorum. In 1520 a Roman ruin known as Brittenburg emerged from the shifting sands on the beach just south of the mouth of the Old Rhine, much to everyone's astonishment. Eventually it disappeared back under the shifting sands. The differences with neighbouring communities and the non-migratory nature of members of the old Katwijk families, Katwijk aan Zee continued its existence as a quiet, close-knit North Sea fishing village, from the 16th century. Katwijks' lighthouse (1605), the second oldest of The Netherlands, is called Vuurbaak and was especially build for the Katwijk fishing fleet. In the first ages of its existence a fire was lit on top of the lighthouse, and the Katwijk beach served as a landing site and dry dock for the typical Katwijk flatboats (in Dutch: bomschuiten), fishing mainly on herring and shrimp. Just before World War I the lighthouse lost its function. An example of a flatboat lays on display at the foot of the lighthouse; the KW 88. Today, fishing is not a major activity in the village anymore; since the 20th century, Katwijk aan Zee is a popular seaside resort. The Netherlands- Maasvlakte Rotterdam
View on details of a work of art "Zandwacht", developed by the Rotterdam based artists' collective "Observatorium". It depicts the formation of sand dunes and it is quite possible that 10-15 years from now the work will be swallowed up by the sand.
Zandwacht rounds off the construction of Maasvlakte II.
Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line).
