The Netherlands-Gaast
Morning view on the Frisian village Gaast, just next to the IJsselmeer dyke. The village was first mentioned in the 13th century as lutekagast. Gaast developed on a sand bank near the former Zuiderzee, nowadays the freshwater IJsselmeer. The economy used to be based on fishing and sailing, but became an agricultural community, later on. The Dutch Reformed church was built in the 14th century. A second, smaller church lost its function in 1998. In the background nature reserve Kooiwaard is visible. The Netherlands-Ferweradeel
View on the Wadden Sea dyke in Ferweradeel (Province Friesland) and the Noorderleeg (Noarderleech in Frisian), a 4000 ha. continuous piece of outer dike pastureland, salt marsh and -closest to the Wadden Sea- mud flats. The image shows slightly elevated, ring-shaped drinking pools for cattle, the so called dobbes. When a huge storm surge pushed seawater up to the dyke here, on the night of October 31, 2006, 150 horses ended up stranded on such a dobbe further away from the dyke and with water all around them. After a joint effort involving firefighters, veterinarians, animal welfare officers and the Dutch Army had failed to bring the animals to safety, six local women on horseback successfully herded the horses across the path. It was an extraordinary event -shown on news channels all over the world- and the story of the Marrum Horse Rescue is etched in the collective memory of Dutch people. The Netherlands-Workum
Workum (Frisian: Warkum) is a town located in the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân in Friesland. It received city rights in 1399 and is one of the eleven Frisian cities. It has a population of about 4,400. The image offers a view on the unfinished St-Gertrud church (1480). The same goes for the 16th Century seperate tower. As the sunlight faded because of incoming clouds this kite aerial session came to an end. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands Hogebeintum church
Hogebeintum (Frisian: Hegebeintum) is a small village in the province of Friesland. Hogebeintum is home to the highest artificial dwelling hill, or terp, in the Netherlands, measuring around 8.8 metres (29 ft) tall. The high ground of the terp was historically (from 600 BC) used as a place of refuge during unusually high tides and storm floods, in a time without dykes.
