Hindeloopen (Hylpen in Frisian) received city rights in 1225 and is one of the eleven Frisian towns. Since the 12th and 13th century, ships from Hindeloopen undertook journeys to the North and Baltic Sea coasts.
The shipping trade brought great prosperity to the town. Hindeloopen developed her own costume and a completely individual painting style on walls and furniture.
The tower is the oldest part of the church and dates from 1593.
