The Netherlands - Muiden
Muiden Castle (Muiderslot) is located in Muiden, some 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, at the mouth of the Vecht river, where it flows into the freshwater IJmeer (that used to be the -saltwater- Zuiderzee). The history of Muiden Castle begins with Count Floris V who built a stone castle at the mouth of the river in 1280, to enforce a toll on traders along a frequently used trade route to Utrecht, one of the most important trade towns of that age. After the murder of Floris in 1296 the castle was eventually demolished around 1300, but rebuilt on the same spot based on the same plan, approximately 80 years later. After a period of neglect in the 19th century the castle was restored to its former glory at the end of that century. Photographed on a peaceful Sunday morning with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands-Hilversum
View on Zuiderheide with the heather (Struikhei-Calluna vulgaris) in full bloom. Nature reserve Zuiderheide is a transition zone between the lateral moraine of the Gooi region and the lower Eem valley. The moraine was thrown up by glaciers in the second-last (Saale) Ice Age, about 120.000 years ago. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). I offer my sincere apology to the manager of the area for the fact that | was not aware of a ban on kites, here, outside the breeding season. I don't think that I caused any harm, by the way. © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands - Kortenhoefse plassen
Originally a peat swamp, this area was drained for agricultural purposes. Later on, large-scale peat harvesting took place. The harvested peat was used as a source of fuel. After harvesting the peat was placed to dry on small strips of land, still visible in the landscape. Under the influence of water and wind a lot of land drowned here, leaving smaller and larger lakes, a sanctuary for all kind of animals, plants and nature lovers.

The Netherlands - Horstermeerpolder.
The Horstermeerpolder (1882) is another example of a "droogmakerij", a special type of polder built at the bottom of a former lake -originally called the Overmeer- from which the water first has been drained.
It is odd to realise that water became land here, while the surrounding (harvested peat-) land became water.
Image made with kite and camera.
