The history of these kitchen gardens in the Dutch dunes goes back to the 16th century. It is not easy to grow vegetables on dunesand. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite line). © Tom Kisjes

Netherlands, the Island Texel.
Eierland Lighthouse, near the village De Cocksdorp, is situated on the northernmost tip of the island. The lighthouse -designed by Quirinus Harder- was built on top of a 20-metre high sand dune and was lit on 1 November 1864. At that time, the distance from the lighthouse to the sea was 3 kilometres!
During the Georgian Uprising on Texel (april 1945) the lighthouse suffered heavy damage. It was repaired by constructing a new wall around it and a new upper-level construction. In this process the lighthouse lost two of its original nine storeys.
Eierland lighthouse is accessible for visitors up to the sixth floor.

Specimens of common mullein (koningskaars-Verbascum thapsus) on the southern slope of a coastal dune, photographed from above. This species is a hairy biennial (tweejarige) plant that can grow to 2 m tall or more. In bloom, its small, yellow flowers are densely grouped on a tall stem, which grows from a large rosette of leaves.

The Netherlands-Zuid-Kennemerland National Park
The park is owned and managed collectively by Vereniging Natuurmonumenten (Natural Monuments Association), Staatsbosbeheer (State Forestry), PWN (Water Supply Company North Holland), Province of Noord-Holland, IVN, and surrounding municipalities and private owners.
The image shows Cremer lake, situated in a part of the park named Duin en Kruidberg. This artificial lake was dug out by order of former estate owner J.T. Cremer, who sold the sand and provided the lake with fish, a.o. carp. In 2012 current owner Natural Monuments Association caught and moved the fish population, made the lake more shallow and thus created a more suitable habitat for aquatic plants, aquatic insects and amphibians.
