The Netherlands - Westzaan
Sea aster (Tripolium pannonicum-Zulte), growing as a pioneer along a newly dug ditch at business park under development HoogTij, near the village Westzaan. Sea aster is a flowering plant, confined in its distribution to salt marshes, estuaries, occasionally to inland salt works and in this case thanks to saltwater seepage (kwel) from the nearby North Sea Canal. Its fresh fleshy lanceolate leaves are edible. The plant flowers well into autumn and hence provides a valuable source of nectar for late-flying butterflies and other insects. She only needs a 1000 kg/ltr milk for her calf to grow up. But most of the time that calf is taken away from her immediately. The calf becomes someone in her head, someone constantly begging for milk. Now the cow produces an average of 7000 kg/ltr a year, more than ten times her weight.
