The Netherlands - Wierum
Afternoon image made through the incoming showers with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). The village Wierum in the province Friesland arose on a mound (terp) in the mud flats, close to the Wadden Sea. The northeastern part of this mound was swallowed up by the sea, after several severe stormfloods. That's why the 11th century Maria church is no longer situated in the centre of the village, but close to the relatively new dyke. Only the western wall of the church tower still dates from the 11th century. The wind vane illustrates the history of fishing. On the first day of December 1893 thirteen (out of seventeen) Wierum fishing vessels were lost during a terrible blizzard; twenty-two men lost their lives. © Tom Kisjes
