The Netherlands-Fort Pannerden
On the headland, where river Rhine - coming from Germany- splits in river Waal (right side) and Pannerden Canal" (left side), lies fort Pannerden (anno 1872). The fort had strategic significance in that it guarded the Pannerden Canal, which supplied the water for the possible inundation of the New Dutch Waterline, but the fort saw little active service. In World War II on May 10, 1940, during the German invasion of the Netherlands, the fort was first bypassed, then surrounded and simply conquered by the invaders. After the War the fort was stripped of all useful materials and fell into disuse. After a period of protests against the decay, in which the fort was squatted twice, local residents of the Fort Pannerden Foundation, the local city council and the State Forestry agreed to restore the fort and to use it as a museum and visitors centre for the surrounding nature reserve Klompenwaard.
