The village Grootschermer exists since the last part of the 13th century, when dykes were constructed around an area, nowadays known as the Eilandspolder. This landscape clearly shows its history of peat cutting. Once it was almost an island, surrounded by large lakes. These lakes were drained in the 17th century and turned into reclaimed land: Schermer and Beemster. The latter can be seen far away in the background.
