Public pay phones in Canada have decreased in number rapidly in recent years, obviously due to the widespread use of cell phones. In 2021, it was reported that there were approximately 8,000 payphones left in Canada (probably much less now), down from over 70,000 in the early 2000s.

Interestingly, in the U.S., phone booths were thought to be linked to criminal activity, and were removed. The efforts led to fewer pay phones in impoverished areas, making them inaccessible to their most-likely users.
