The Winter of 2017/18 has been a banner year for snowy owl sightings in Northern Illinois, with the Lake Michigan Shoreline especially active. Many people have been very successful finding the snowies with very little searching. More than once this season we struck out looking for snowies where they have been sighted, and coming up empty each time. With Spring just around the corner, the snowies traditionally head back north. So, with little left to lose, we struck out one more time to search unexplored territory. Not expecting much, we hoped to find at least some hawks or eagles, but even that came up empty. Finally, we decided to head for home, and just before we did, I spotted this snowy in one of the least likely areas possible. He was perched on a fence post not 10 feet from a busy country intersection that is a favorite for hillrods to roar their big diesel trucks. He sat there and posed for us while we shot him from multiple angles. Unfortunately, a cold wind was blowing, and the sun was close to setting, which necessitated shooting at high ISO's in order to keep the shutter speed fast enough.

For anyone curious, the exact spotting location was about 2 miles south of Sandwich, Illinois at the intersection of Millington Road (E. 30th) and Rogers Road (N. 4650th).
