Another photo from last weekends London Flickr Group Photowalk. We walked a circular route around Kings Cross and St Pancras Stations, the Dixon Jones designed Kings Place is just one of the buildings that I'd not photographed previously. The gently undulating facade reflected the clouds and created some great architectural abstracts.

You can see other photos from the Photowalk here : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577198...

From Wikipedia "Following a limited architectural competition, Dixon Jones was appointed as the architect for Kings Place. The brief was for it to be a large building of far higher quality than the normal spec office development. The building was to be durable, not only in terms of quality of the build materials, but in its design. It had to be spatially generous and environmentally impeccable. Most importantly, it had to fit into a local urban architecture which is not uniform in scale.

The building has wavy glass runs along the west-facing York Way frontage; this three-layered glass façade is a free-standing transparent surface made up of hundreds of very slightly curved sheets of glass. As well as reducing heat gain from the afternoon sun and increasing wind resistance, the glass wall provides Kings Place with a distinctive facade."

A slightly alternative group shot from the recent London Flickr Group taken using the reflective underside of the mirrored colonnade in Gasholders Park.

I've tagged those whose settings allow me, but if you'd like to add yourself then please do.

You can see other photos taken during the walk in the relevent Photowalk thread : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577198...

From the Bell Phillips Architects website : "In 2008 we won a design competition to remodel the Grade II listed Gasholder No. 8 as a new public space in the heart of King’s Cross. The proposal frames a central garden with a stunning mirror-polished stainless steel colonnade within the Victorian gasholder guideframe. The new structure provides a more intimate and contemporary counterpoint to the vast historic structure.

This fragile industrial icon was dismantled and removed from its site in King’s Cross and transported to Yorkshire where it underwent repairs, refurbishment and repainting. On completion it was carefully re-erected in a more prominent position adjacent to the Regent’s Canal." Source : www.bellphillips.com/project/gasholder-8-park/

The unusually shaped SimpsonHaugh & Partners designed One Blackfriars, seen here on the left, has grown on me quite a bit since I first saw it, not least as it always seems to photograph well, whatever the lighting conditions.

On the subject of London, I'm organising a London Flickr Group photowalk around the Nine Elms / Battersea area for Sunday 20th February, more details here if anyone is interested :
www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577219...

From Wikipedia, "One Blackfriars is a mixed-use development at No. 1 Blackfriars Road in Bankside, London. It is informally known as The Vase or The Boomerang due to its shape.

The development is made up of a 50-storey tower of a maximum height of 170 m and two smaller buildings of six and four storeys respectively. Uses include residential flats, a hotel and retail. In addition, a new public space will be created. The site was formerly occupied by the headquarters of Sainsbury's supermarket.

Initially promoted by the Beetham Organisation, the tower was originally proposed at 225 metres (738 ft), with 68 storeys, but was eventually scaled down after concerns about its impact on the rest of London. A revised planning application for a 163 metres (535 ft), 49-storey tower was submitted on 30 October 2006. Although 57 m shorter than before, this would still make it one of the tallest buildings in the city, similar in height to the Gherkin and Tower 42 in the City of London. According to the architect Ian Simpson, the unusual shape of the building was inspired by Timo Sarpaneva's classic Lansetti glass vase from 1952.

Definitely my last upload of the colonnade that forms the backbone of the Cohen Quad. I'm aware I've uploaded quite a few but I think that's at least in part because of a combination of Covd last year and a last minute withdrawal from Open Doors two years ago this years OPT event was my first opportunity to get inside.

From Alison Brook's website : "This project is a 21st century reinvention of the ‘collegiate quadrangle’, the basis of Oxford’s academic and urban fabric. The Oxford quadrangle is an 800 year old pedagogical model that combines student rooms with teaching spaces, organised around landscaped courtyards. Every Oxford college is a variation of this typology. Alison Brooks Architects’ new 6000m² Cohen Quad will expand Exeter College’s 700 year old campus in the heart of Oxford, with undergraduate and graduate living accommodation for 90 students, an auditorium, seminar rooms, social learning spaces, archive, café, roof terraces, offices and fellows’ accommodation."

The Kings Cross Light tunnel was a fittingly photogenic end point to the recent London Flickr Group photowalk. I've been several times before but I always manage to find shots to take.

You can see other photos from the Photowalk here : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577198...

If you're interested in joining us for future Photowalks then I'd suggest joining the London Flickr Group and keeping an eye on the discussion threads.

From a Kings Cross Press Release : "A new tunnel, with integrated light wall, opened yesterday at King’s Cross. The 90m long tunnel, which has a LED integrated light-wall running its entire length, was designed by Speirs + Major and delivered by The Light Lab. The tunnel itself has been designed by architects Allies & Morrison and links St Pancras International and King’s Cross St Pancras Underground stations to the new public spaces, restaurants, offices and homes at King’s Cross.

Commuters were treated to something a little different on Monday morning, as the tunnel was open to the public, with commuters able to enjoy the debut light installation called Pipette. The dedicated art work on display was created by Miriam Sleeman (The Cross Kings) and Tom Sloan (Tom Sloan Design) and is designed to evoke the colourful tapestry of King’s Cross through a tranquil yet animated design."
