Taken outside a shop in Picadilly Circus, this guy with his bag proved the perfect subject to shoot in front of this shop window.

I'll be having a short break from my Manchester / Salford shots to upload my shots from the recent Advanced Photographer Magazine 24 hour London photoshoot I undertook. About 100 of us spent the whole day photographing the capital so it's going to be fascinating to see what everyone got up to with their time.

I'm not the biggest fan of 'tourist tat' at the best of times but surely it isn't just me that wonders why anyone would want a fridge magnet of a small naked boy holding his penis.........

From Wikipedia : "Manneken Pis is a landmark 61 cm (24 in) bronze fountain sculpture in central Brussels (Belgium), depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain's basin. It was designed by Jérôme Duquesnoy the Elder [nl; fr] and put in place in 1618 or 1619. The current statue is a replica which dates from 1965. The original is kept in the Brussels City Museum. Manneken Pis is the best-known symbol of the people of Brussels. It also embodies their sense of humour (called zwanze in the dialect of Brussels) and their independence of mind.

Manneken Pis is located only five minutes' walk from the Grand Place (Brussels' main square), at the junction of Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat and the pedestrian Rue de l'Étuve/Stoofstraat."

My previous post was a photo of Manneken Pis Fridge magnets and I pondered why anyone would buy one. The same goes for a 2ft high plastic replica but more so........

I've just put together a flickr album of similar photos if you'd like to see more 'tourist tat' from around the world........ www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157717777077558

Thing is this stuff may be tourist tat but I'm guessing someone somewhere is going to be selling a few million of these of the next few months what with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics coinciding.

I'd wanted to get a shot like this for a while now but despite the fact the Eiffel Tower souvenir sellers are everywhere in large numbers they're not too keen to be photographed. I'm guessing most of them aren't in France legally because everytime a policeman appears they swarm away only to come sidling back ten minute later.

From Wikipedia : "A souvenir (from French, for a rememberance or memory), memento, keepsake or token of rememberance is an object a person acquires for the memories the owner associates with it. The term souvenir brings to mind the mass-produced kitch that is the main commodity of souvenir and gift shops in many tourist traps around the world. But a souvenir can be any object that can be collected or purchased and transported home by the traveler. The object itself has no real significance other than the psychological connection the possessor has with the object as a symbol of past experience. Without the owner's input, the object's meaning is invisible and cannot be articulated."
