A picturesque scene in Stoofstraat, one of the small streets that surround the Grand Place in central Brussels.

I visited two years ago for a long photo weekend as one of two trips I won after winning a photo competition for images taken during a Trey Ratcliff photowalk in London the previous Autumn. It sounds glamorous (sort of.....) but actually the prize consisted of two Flixbus return tickets to anywhere in Europe. As my wife is allergic to coach travel I chose to visit Brussels and Rotterdam. They seemed obvious choices as I wasn't keen on spending say 36hrs on a coach to Prague.......

If anyone's got some time on their hands feel free to let me know which ones I definitely should include and those you're indifferent too as I probably need to cull about half of them.......

From Wikipedia : "Despite its name, the Brussels-Capital Region is not the capital of Belgium. Article 194 of the Belgian Constitution establishes that the capital of Belgium is the City of Brussels, the municipality in the region that is the city's core.

The City of Brussels is the location of many national institutions. The Royal Palace, where the King of the Belgians exercises his prerogatives as head of state, is situated alongside Brussels' Park (not to be confused with the Royal Castle of Laeken, the official home of the Belgian Royal Family). The Palace of the Nation is located on the opposite side of this park, and is the seat of the Belgian Federal Parliament. The office of the Prime Minister of Belgium, colloquially called Law Street 16 (French: 16, rue de la Loi, Dutch: Wetstraat 16), is located adjacent to this building. It is also where the Council of Ministers holds its meetings. The Court of Cassation, Belgium's main court, has its seat in the Palace of Justice. Other important institutions in the City of Brussels are the Constitutional Court, the Council of State, the Court of Audit, the Royal Belgian Mint and the National Bank of Belgium.

The City of Brussels is also the capital of both the French Community of Belgium and the Flemish Community. The Flemish Parliament and Flemish Government have their seats in Brussels, and so do the Parliament of the French Community and the Government of the French Community. "

One of the more ornate facades that front onto the Grand Place in the historic heart of Brussels.

Busy working on a new Travel Portfolio Book I'm calling 'Around the World in 80 pages'. Whilst there's not much need for a physical portfolio these days it's always nice to see your photos in print.

If you're interested you can see mt 'work in progress' selection of photos here : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157716547278846

From Wikipedia : "The Grand Place ("Grand Square"; also used in English) or Grote Markt "Grand Market") is the central square of Brussels, Belgium. It is surrounded by opulent guildhalls and two larger edifices, the city's Town Hall, and the King's House or Breadhouse (French: Maison du Roi, Dutch: Broodhuis) building containing the Brussels City Museum. The square measures 68 by 110 metres (223 by 361 ft).

The Grand Place is the most important tourist destination and most memorable landmark in Brussels. It is also considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998."

The (rather) Grand Place in Brussels at dusk. I took this whilst patiently waiting for them to switch on the buildings floodlights, I rather light it though as it has more of a Medieval atmosphere.
