This neon sign at Gods Own Junkyard was vaguely familar to me so I think it may have used to be located in Soho before retiring to the suburbs.........
Gods Own Junkyard is tucked away on an un-prepossessing Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, E17. Their family owned neon Art Gallery is well worth hunting down even if they don't allow photography with DLSR's (albeit I couldn't resist sneaking a few from the hip......). Presumably still closed just at the moment but when things reopen it should be near the top of your list if you've not visited before. It's free to visit but only open to the public Friday to Sunday, it's Rolling Scones cafe is pretty good too.

From www.godsownjunkyard.co.uk : "Chris Bracey has been the Neon Man for 37 years creating iconic artpieces for David la chappelle, Martin Creed etc. With a cult following in London and Los Angeles. New & used neon fantasies, salvaged signs, reclaimed neon signs, old movie props and retro displays. Neon art made from found objects, retrieved and renewed waste and lights. Fairground & circus lighting, architectural sign salvage. Led & cold cathode luxury products. Designers & makers of all things with light.
Chris has made, installed and collected signs that have appeared behind some of the greatest stars. Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut, Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jack Nicholson in Batman are just a few that have appeared alongside the collection. When the film is rapped neons are discarded like yesterdays newspapers, unwanted, unloved. Chris has collected these neon and bulb icons and salvages old neons and architectural advertising from the streets before they disappear forever. Repaired and resurrected, coupled with quirky art and powered up to shine like jewels of light. Icons in their own right, Gods own junk yard where neon never dies."

I'm guessing this '24hr Liquor Store' neon sign at Gods Own Junkyard is a vintage original that's been saved from landfill. It reminds me of several road trips I've done through the USA so one day I'd love to have some of these to fill my rock star mansion......

Of the hundreds of neon signs at Gods Own Junkyard this 'Art is never finished only abandoned' was definitely amongst my favourites thanks to the mix of 'found' materials, colours and fonts used. Like most pieces on display they are for sale but other than the smallest pieces they were well out of my price range.

Amongst the rescued, vintage signs at Gods Own Junkyard, there's also a lot which have featured in films as well as many pieces of new neon art for sale if you've the money. There's also a disco mirrorball that must have been about 2m plus in diameter........

Love and Death at Gods Own Junkyard.
I liked the apparent 'chaos with a hint of sleaze' this shot captures, it nicely echoes the origins of the business in making signs for Soho.
