One of my intentions for this years Advanced Photographer / Nikon #Photo24London event was to get some shots of Tower Bridge exactly like this one.......

For this shot I put the tripod as low as it would go to make the most of the 11mm lens I was using. The verticals aren't straight but that was never my intention.

Recently announced as winner of the 'Iconic London' category of the Nikon Photo24 competition.

I didn't spend too long wandering around Canary Wharf when I visited back in May as the weather by this point had turned less than Summery (and stayed that way ever since it would seem). I think this is by far the best shot I took there and an observation on how smoking has become so socially unacceptable everyone has to stand in their own little cubicle.

Another for my 'Best of 2012' set I think : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/sets/72157629086259368

One of two of my images shortlisted for the Architects Eye 2013 photographic competition : www.architectseye.co.uk/
Results to be announced on 12/06/13...... Update : Very pleased to find out I won the 'Architecture and People' category with this image.

From the Building Design article, Judge and architectural photographer Quintin Lake said: “The winning image stood out immediately for its combination of strong geometry and contemporary authenticity, captured at just the right moment. The use of primarily monochrome colour has been used to advantage by the photographer to focus our attention on the hands and faces. The exile of smokers from their place of work are one of few private moments we see publicly on the street today: a strange piece of modern theatre beautifully captured in this image.”

For those interested in the story behind the image you can find out more in a short interview I did for a Spanish blog here : translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n...

24/06/14 : The latest news for this image is it's been shortlisted for the 'Environmental Photographer of the Year 2014'. The Exhibition will be showing at the Royal Geographical Society in London for the next few weeks.

A striking cafe found at the very rear of the Science Museum in South Kensington.

This is one of my favourite shots from the recent 24hr London photoshoot I took part in. Organised by Advanced Photographer Magazine it was a great opportunity to spend some time photographing our wonderful capital city even if it turned out to be more a challenge than I'd anticipated mostly due to the huge distance walked and the less than perfect weather.

Update : Winner of 'Best overall image' in the Photo24 Competition. See Issue 34 of Advanced Photographer for an article on the Photo24 Challenge.

Hot off the press, this is one of my favourite images from my photographic trip to Barcelona last weekend. It's taken looking up one of the lightwells to Herzog & de Meuron's extraordinary Forum building. Completed in 2004, sadly the building seemed rather disused and neglected.

It's going to take me a while to edit and post process the 1200 photos so it might be a while before I post some more from the trip but I thought I'd post this as a bit of a teaser.

From Wikipedia : "The Forum Building, designed by the Swiss architects Jaques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (Herzog & de Meuron), is an architectural landmark in Barcelona. The building is triangular in shape, measuring 180 meters on each side and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formed by Diagonal Avenue, Rambla de Prim and the Ronda Litoral."

Classic 'Rule of thirds' demonstration. Given his obsession with the grid I'd like to think the Architect Richard Meier would like this shot if he were to see it.

Click here shots of Richard Meier buildings from around the World : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157602126379216

From Wikipedia : "Meier embraced the difficult task of creating a building that would ultimately display a variety of contemporary artworks that were unknown to him at the time of design. The choice to build the museum in the Plaça dels Ángels is consistent with Meier’s vision to situate the building amongst some of Barcelona’s oldest streets and buildings, in addition to revamping the public space of the Raval.

After the completion of the $35 million construction, local media referred to the museum as “the pearl” amongst the old architecture and narrow streets just a few blocks from Gothic center of Barcelona. The building’s architectural style has strong references to Modernism. The large (120 by 35 meters) white building has much of its southern elevation glazed, providing the visitor with views across the plaza, and allowing for an abundance of natural light to illuminate the interior galleries. The museum has three main galleries, which can be subdivided, as well as five smaller galleries, one of which is in a tower."
