As much as I like shooting amazing scenes such as the Pena National Palace in Sintra, shown below, what I really enjoy shooting are the 'quieter' shots such as this one as they say just as much, if not more, about a place.

Every time I return from travelling with my camera I always say I should have take more people photos. My trip to Lisbon was no exception, whilst I did take more than I normally do I do seem have mostly shot other tourists........

In the case of this couple, they were enjoying the views from the Castle of St George. This is one of a series of shots where I took advantage of the wonderful backlighting to take some striking silhouettes.

From Wikipedia : "São Jorge Castle (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge) is a Moorish castle occupying a commanding hilltop overlooking the historic centre of the Portuguese city of Lisbon and Tagus River. The strongly fortified citadel dates from medieval period of Portuguese history, and is one of the main tourist sites of Lisbon.

Although the first fortifications on this hilltop date to the 2nd century BC, archaeological excavations have identified a human presence in the Tagus valley as far back as the 6th century BC. The first fortification was, presumably, erected in 48 BC, when Lisbon was classified as a Roman municipality.

The hill was first used by indigenous Celtic tribes, then by Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians as a defensible outpost that was later expropriated by Roman, Suebic, Visigothic, and Moorish peoples. During the 10th century, the fortifications were rebuilt by Muslim Berber forces, these included the walls or Cerca Moura (Moorish Encirclment)."

(Yet) Another shot of the distinctive paving at the Monument to the Discoveries in Belém, Lisbon. When you have a scene with as much photographic potential as this it would be rude not to take full advantage of it........

From Wikipedia : "Located on the edge of the Tagus' northern bank, this 52 metre-high slab of concrete, was erected in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. The monument is sculpted in the form of a ship's prow, with dozens of figures from Portuguese history following a statue of the Infante Henry sculpted in base relief. Adjacent to the monument is a calçada square in the form of a map, showing the routes of various Portuguese explorers, during the Age of Discovery."

Just starting to turn my attention to processing my RAW files from my trip to Lisbon back in September. It was a great trip for a number of reasons ; fantastic places to photograph, some much needed sunshine, the food and of course catching up with a couple of friends I don't see as often as I'd like.

From Wikipedia : "The Pena National Palace (Portuguese: Palácio Nacional da Pena) is a Romanticist palace in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, Portugal. The palace stands on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials."

We visited the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora early one morning during our September trip, the place was beautiful and we were lucky enough to have the place almost to ourselves.

Click here to see photos from my trip to Lisbon as well as a previous trip to Portugal : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157605502948784

From Wikipedia : "The Church or Monastery of São Vicente de Fora; meaning "Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls" is a 17th-century church and monastery in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the most important monasteries and mannerist buildings in the country. The monastery also contains the royal pantheon of the Braganza monarchs of Portugal.

The original Monastery of São Vicente de Fora was founded around 1147 by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, for the Augustinian Order. The Monastery, built in Romanesque style outside the city walls, was one of the most important monastic foundations in mediaeval Portugal. It is dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa, patron saint of Lisbon, whose relics were brought from the Algarve to Lisbon in the 12th century."
