Unfortunately the public can only ascend one floor of the three floors of the Tulip Stair, this answer my question I had before I went of why do you never see shots looking down.

I think I'll have to add climbing to the top of this stair to my list of ambitions as I'm pretty sure the view back down would be pretty good too. If anyone from the National Maritime Museum can get in touch and make one of my dreams come true that would be great.......

You can see more of my spiral stair shots here : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/sets/72157649305925251

As one of the few that went to visit the Dome in 2000, I remember having a great day out. From what I recall their biggest problem was the volume of negative publicity that followed making the VIPs and press wait about a bit at the grand opening.

Wikipedia has this to say : 'The project was largely reported by the press to have been a flop: badly thought-out, badly executed, and leaving the government with the embarrassing question of what to do with it afterwards. During 2000 the organisers repeatedly asked for, and received, more cash from the Millennium Commission, the Lottery body which supported it...

Press reports suggested that Blair personally placed a high priority on making the Dome a success. But part of the problem was that the financial predictions were based on an unrealistically high forecast of visitor numbers at 12 million. During the 12 months it was open there were approximately 6.5 million visitors — slightly more than the 6 million that attended the Festival of Britain, which only ran from May to September. Unlike the press, visitor feedback was extremely positive. It was the most popular tourist attraction in 2000, second was the London Eye; third was Alton Towers, which had been first in 1999.'

I've never really got on with monochrome but it does seems suddenly I'm starting to 'get it'. It's not that I've had trouble pre-visualising what would work in Black and White, it's just that I've never seen the point of photograping the colourful world in Black and White.

As my photoshop skills increase I'm able to do a lot of the things I used to do in a darkroom but with more consistant results. That and you can just 'undo' rather than having to reach for another sheet of expensive paper.

Still, having said all that, I'd recommend everyone has a go at traditional B&W printing because there's nothing better than seeing a photo appear before your eyes.

I thought yesterdays colour upload of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London might make for a decent dramatic mono conversion. Do you agree ?

When I visited Greenwich recently, conditions at the Old Royal Naval College allowed for good depth of field so I was able to get a shot of the statue in the middle of the courtyard and the dome of Christopher Wrens Chapel in focus too.
