I didn't spend too long wandering around Canary Wharf when I visited back in May as the weather by this point had turned less than Summery (and stayed that way ever since it would seem). I think this is by far the best shot I took there and an observation on how smoking has become so socially unacceptable everyone has to stand in their own little cubicle.

Another for my 'Best of 2012' set I think : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/sets/72157629086259368

One of two of my images shortlisted for the Architects Eye 2013 photographic competition : www.architectseye.co.uk/
Results to be announced on 12/06/13...... Update : Very pleased to find out I won the 'Architecture and People' category with this image.

From the Building Design article, Judge and architectural photographer Quintin Lake said: “The winning image stood out immediately for its combination of strong geometry and contemporary authenticity, captured at just the right moment. The use of primarily monochrome colour has been used to advantage by the photographer to focus our attention on the hands and faces. The exile of smokers from their place of work are one of few private moments we see publicly on the street today: a strange piece of modern theatre beautifully captured in this image.”

For those interested in the story behind the image you can find out more in a short interview I did for a Spanish blog here : translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n...

24/06/14 : The latest news for this image is it's been shortlisted for the 'Environmental Photographer of the Year 2014'. The Exhibition will be showing at the Royal Geographical Society in London for the next few weeks.

My favourite shot of the series as the blue/green glass screen in the background adds some additional interest. I really need to return to Paddington Basin on a sunny day as there were quite a few more architectural abstract / details to be photographed.

And now for something a bit different. This shot of a masked spectator was taken at the Paralympics last week. Obviously a keen Team GB fan but I do wonder how much he can actually see through the mask.

The 'Oxford Photographers' Artweeks 2016 Group Exhibition at the Mathematical Institute is now open to the public. Obviously I'd rather you went to see the prints in person if you can but for those that can't make it along here's another of my square format architectural images on display.

This reworking of a previously uploaded abstract shot is a detail of the facade of the London 2012 Basketball Arena. One of my favourite buildings from London 2012, a shame then that it was only temporary and still sits somewhere in a warehouse from what I understand.

More details of the Exhibition here for those in the Oxford area : www.facebook.com/events/1042876822435988/

The Exhibition features a wide range of different photographic genres from myself and ten other talented local photographers. There should be something for everyone.......

Lifesize statues of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama in the Selfridges Department Store window on Oxford Street, taken last Summer. Yesterdays square format shot is currently Explore, my first of 2013, so it would seem other people find her work fascinating too.

From Wikipedia : "Kusama's work is based in conceptual art and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. Kusama is also a published novelist and poet, and has created notable work in film and fashion design. Major retrospectives of her work have been held at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and Tate Modern, whilst in 2008 Christies New York sold a work by her for $5.1 million, a record for a living female artist."
