I took this shot of the beautifully simple Christmas tree in the Bodleian Schools Quadrangle on the night of the Oxford Christmas Lights switch on. I wish I'd had longer to take the photo but I couldn't stop as I was part of the Unsilent Night procession that was winding its way around the back lanes of Oxford. From Wikipedia : "Father Christmas dates back at least as far as the 17th century in Britain, and pictures of him survive from that era, portraying him as a well-nourished bearded man dressed in a long green fur-lined robe. He typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, and was reflected as the "Ghost of Christmas Present" in the Charles Dickens's classic A Christmas Carol, a great genial man in a green coat lined with fur, who takes Ebenezer Scrooge through the bustling streets of London on Christmas morning, sprinkling the essence of Christmas onto the happy populace.

Since the Victorian era, Father Christmas has gradually merged with the pre-modern gift giver St Nicholas ( Dutch Sinterklaas, hence Santa Claus) and associated folklore. Nowadays he is often called Santa Claus but also often referred to in Britain as Father Christmas: the two names are synonyms."

Somewhat bizarrely given the Mediterranean climate part of the Popeye film set has been transformed into Santas Grotto, complete with anamatronic reindeer and elves making christmas presents (thats the elves, not the reindeer). Santa Claus was strangely absent, probably down on the beach sunning himself.

Merry Christmas to all Flickrers everywhere (and everyone else) !

Just finished upload my Copenhagen shots in time to slip a few Christmas related shots onto my photostream. The Coca-Cola roadshow came of Broad Street in Oxford last week, just happened to have my camera with me (mainly because I've always been told a good photographer carries their camera everywhere). I couldn't really decide if the scene complete with fake snow was crass commericalism or not but I thought it made a bright and colourful photo.........

Taken during a manic day in London last Sunday, here's the Regent Street Christmas lights. The sky is a touch noisy thanks to the 1600 ISO necessary for hand-holding but hopefully you can overlook this, it is Christmas afterall........
