It's not like I don't have a hundred and one other things to do but once I've got an idea into my head it's hard to let it go so here's the fake tilt/shift version I said earlier would have to wait until I had a bit more time....
If you fancy having a go yourself all you do is make a duplicate layer, blur it and then selectively erase away using brushes of increasing size and opacity. To exaggerate the effect I'd recommend then adding a bit more blur to the far background to increase the apparent depth.

Probably my favourite shot I've taken of Docklands, this shot from the top of the Orbit tower at the London 2012 Olympic Park has been given a dramatic B&W conversion to which I've then applied a fake tilt-shift effect in Photoshop.

I thought I'd try a sepia version of this fake tilt/shift shot of the famous Florence Cathedral Duomo from the Palazzo Vecchio clock tower. I think although it lacks the impact of the colour version maybe the illusion of depth is enhanced as you don't get the 'one third blue, two thirds tiled roof' which created such a definite transition. Anyone agree with me ?

Just a quick reminder that I've been invited to give a Paris slideshow tonight (Thursday 3rd November) at Wallingford Photographic Club, about 10 miles south of Oxford. The show starts at 8pm, visitors are welcome to attend for a small fee (just as long as you don't heckle....).
I'll be showing photos from last years trips to Paris, there'll be an emphasis on architecture and the famous landmarks with a sprinkling of everything else thrown in to mix it up a bit. If you're interested, click here for more info : www.wallingford-photographic-club.org.uk/content/programme
To see some of the images I'll be showing, click here : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/sets/72157624233357900/
I've previously made a Blurb book featuring many of these images, there's now also an Apple ebook version available for £2.99 : www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2181298

Today has been one of those Sundays where there's nothing going on it's cold out so we're all quite happy sat around doing as little as possible. This shot is a good example of what happens when I've got too much time on my hands. I've cropped to a 2:1 panoramic ratio, converted to mono (with an infra-red preset to enhance the trees / sky), applied a bit of difusion, a Topaz Adjust filter, a subtle blue tint ad finally a fake Tile / Shift effect in Photoshop. Oh, and a frame. Who says travel photography can't be a little bit arty ?
Crazy thing is I've actually got about a million other things I could (and probably should) be doing.
