Okay, so this backlit shot of 'The Receiver has burnt out a touch but for me that just adds to the drama of the image. One of the interesting things about this shot is the way that the convex shape of the sculpture exaggerates my distance from the object. I was quite close, maybe 4 or 5 metres away using a wide angle lense, and yet I'm barely a small speck in the reflection.

I photographed the ceiling of the Sheldonian nearly twenty years ago when I first arrived in Oxford, they've recently finished restoring it and it was more amazing than I remembered it.

From Wikipedia : "Nothing is known for sure of Wren's first designs for the Sheldonian, but the finished building was a sharp, unmistakable break from the Gothic past. Wren designed the Sheldonian based on Serlio's engraving of the D-shaped Theatre of Marcellus in Rome in the first century BC.

Like any Mediterranean theatre of that time, the Theatre of Marcellus had no roof: the audience relied on a temporary awning for inclement weather. But 17th century Oxford was not ancient Rome, and the Theatre needed a permanent roof. The span of the D-shaped roof was over 70 feet (21m), however. No timbers existed that were long enough to cross that distance, and Wren dismissed the obvious solution of a Gothic roof. Instead, he decided to use the "geometrical flat floor" grid developed twenty years before by Oxford professor John Wallis.

It involved: "...creating a series of trusses which were built up from shorter section and held in place by their own weight, with help from judiciously placed iron bolts and plates..so effective [was the roof] that for nearly a century the University Press stored its books...and for many years it was the largest unsupported floor in existence...'"

My friend and Danish host, Thomas Roland (I think) inside an Olafur Eliasson installation called 'Your blind passenger". The coloured mist was so think you couldn't even see your own hand, it proved to be a very effective and dis-orientating work (and enormous fun for kids of all ages).

From Wikipedia : "Eliasson's later installation Din blinde passager (Your blind passenger) (2010), commissioned by the Arken Museum of Modern Art, is a 90-metre-long tunnel. Entering the tunnel, the visitor is surrounded by dense fog. With visibility at just 1.5 metres, museumgoers have to use senses other than sight to orient themselves in relation to their surroundings."

The first upload from my recent trip to Turkey (and more embarrassingly this is only about the 6th photo I've uploaded from 2011 and we're nearly half way through). Whilst it was a family holiday spent with my family doing family type things I think I've quite a few worth uploading such as this spiral stair found in our hotel.

Given the lack of colour in the original shot, I thought this photo of More London would be a good candidate for one of my blue tinted conversions. I`ve rotated it too but I´m less sure about that.
