Taken inside Bath Abbey en-route to Devon, this is one of my favourite shots from our recent trip.

I do love my 11-17mm Tamron lense. Having such a wide angle of view means you can handhold it down to some very low shutter speeds, useful in most architectural interior shots. Bath Abbey, in contrast to most English Cathedrals, was quite brightly illuminated by the tall Perpendicular Gothic windows.

An alternative mono version of a previously uploaded shot of the wonderful spiral stair at the rear of Heals Tottenham Court Road Department Store.

From Wikipedia : "Heal’s has operated since 1818 in Tottenham Court Road, and from the present site since 1840. Its first purpose-built store, completed in 1854, was then one of the largest in London: the architect was James Morant Lockyer who presented the RIBA with a photographic elevation in May 1855. This is one of the earliest known professional applications of architectural photography in Britain.

The central part of the present building was commissioned by Ambrose Heal and designed by his cousin, and best friend, Cecil Brewer of the architectural practice Smith and Brewer. It was completed in 1917 and is a distinctive modern building, immediately hailed as a landmark in shop architecture, subsequently extended in a number of phases. An extension on the southern side of the building was added in 1938, designed by Sir Edward Maufe."

I'm happy to admit this photo of the Grande Arche was inspired by others I'd seen on Flickr. I've given it my (almost) trademark sq crop / blue tint treatment to give it a bit of a twist.

From Wikipedia : "The Arche is almost a perfect cube (width: 108m, height: 110m, depth: 112m); it has been suggested that the structure looks like a four-dimensional hypercube (a tesseract) projected onto the three-dimensional world. It has a prestressed concrete frame covered with glass and Carrara marble from Italy and was built by the French civil engineering company Bouygues."

"The Clarendon Building is a landmark Grade I listed building in Oxford, England, owned by the University of Oxford. It was built between 1711 and 1713 to house the Oxford University Press. It stands in the centre of the city in Broad Street, near the Bodleian Library and the Sheldonian Theatre. It was vacated by the Press in the early nineteenth century, and used by the university for administrative purposes. In 1975 it was handed over to the Bodleian Library, and now provides office and meeting space for senior members of staff.

The building was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor (Christopher Wren's greatest pupil) and built between 1711 and 1715 to house the Press's printing operations. Before the construction of the Clarendon Building, the presses were in the basement of the Sheldonian Theatre, and the compositors could not work when the Theatre was in use for ceremonies." I think I've been to the Arab World Institute three times now but this trip was the first time I'd appreciated the photographic potential of the structure that forms the entrance gate. In some ways was more interesting than the very rational Institute itself (consequently there's a few more of them to come).
