Hot off the press, this is one of my favourite images from my photographic trip to Barcelona last weekend. It's taken looking up one of the lightwells to Herzog & de Meuron's extraordinary Forum building. Completed in 2004, sadly the building seemed rather disused and neglected.

It's going to take me a while to edit and post process the 1200 photos so it might be a while before I post some more from the trip but I thought I'd post this as a bit of a teaser.

From Wikipedia : "The Forum Building, designed by the Swiss architects Jaques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (Herzog & de Meuron), is an architectural landmark in Barcelona. The building is triangular in shape, measuring 180 meters on each side and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formed by Diagonal Avenue, Rambla de Prim and the Ronda Litoral."

This 8mm fisheye shot was one of a number taken during my fourth visit to the Herzog & de Meuron designed Blavatnik School of Government.

Not normally open the the public, this University of Oxford hold Open Days a couple of times a year when they seem to enjoy showing their building off to everyone. There seems to be a lot of sense in this as the percieved impression I get is that no-one is a fan of the blank spaceship like exterior but everyone loves the free flowing spaces of the interior.

From Wikipedia : "The Blavatnik School of Government is located in the University of Oxford's Radcliffe Observatory Quarter on Woodstock Road, however its main entrance is on Walton Street. The building is designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron to promote open discussion, interaction and collaboration. The central forum is inspired by the idea of openness and transparency and connects all the floors together. Construction work started in autumn 2013, after some controversy, and ended in late 2015. The building is controlled by a combination of systems and technology that helps minimise its environmental impact.

The building is taller than Carfax Tower in the centre of Oxford, this dominating the site and causing opposition to the scheme by local residents in the Jericho district of the city and elsewhere. The site is immediately to the south of the café/bar Freud, in the historic 1836 Greek revival St Paul's Church on Walton Street. The scheme has been opposed by the cafe's owner, David Freud, due to its size compared to the church building. The site is also opposite the classical Oxford University Press building. In Spring 2013, a public meeting was held in St Barnabas Church and the building was described as "a concrete marshmallow".

My favourite shot yet of the Herzog & de Meuron Tate Modern Turbine Hall, I think the reason I like it so much is the symmetrical placement of couple in the foreground. A touch of the Topaz Adjust PS plug-in has also brought out the texture in the concrete floor revealing traces of the Doris Salcedo’s Shibboleth crack, the 2007 Unilever installation.

For more Museums and Galleries click here : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/sets/72157608768742010

From Wikipedia : "The Turbine Hall, which once housed the electricity generators of the old power station, is five storeys tall with 3,400 square metres of floorspace. It is used to display large specially-commissioned works by contemporary artists, between October and March each year in a series sponsored by Unilever. This series was planned to last the gallery's first five years, but the popularity of the series has led to its extension until at least 2012."

Before I return to Lisbon shots, assuming I get a chance today to process some more shots, here's one hot off the press from a talk / tour of the University of Oxford Blavatnik School of Government.

Having seen this spiral stair in the Herzog & de Meuron designed building under construction last Spring I'd pre-visualised this shot about nine months ago.......

The Forum by Herzog and de Meuron is one of the most extraordinary buildings I've seen. I'm not entirely convinced I like the exterior and unfortunately it wasn't open on the day of my visit so I can't comment on the interior. It sure made for interesting Architectural shots though, like this one of the cantilevered corner.
