The Porthmadog cross town link is a section of the 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm) narrow gauge Welsh Highland Railway, specifically built to link with the Ffestiniog Railway in Porthmadog, and runs along partly what was called the Junction Railway, previously existing as part of the original Welsh Highland Railway. This had been removed some time after that railway closed in 1936.
It has been built using the new powers obtained by the Ffestiniog Railway and runs from Harbour station on the Ffestiniog Railway to Pen-y-Mount Junction on the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. The line reopened on 8 January 2011, linking the Ffestiniog Railway with the Croesor Tramway allowing passenger trains to run between Caernarfon and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

South African Railways Class NGG16 2-6-2 + 2-6-2T Beyer Garratt locomotive built by Beyer Peacock was one of a batch of 7 locomotives which were ordered by the Tsumeb Copper Corp of South West Africa in 1958 but when its line was altered to Cape Gauge, South African Railways took over the order. They the last steam locos built by Beyer Peacock.
138 was obtained from the Alfred County Railway and arrived in January 1997. The locomotive received an overhaul in the winter of 2003/4 and was withdrawn in late 2007 and stripped for 10 year boiler inspection when its boiler ticket expired
During its overhaul the original boiler and oil firing were retained. It was repainted with in a red livery and re-entered service in May 2010. 138 was converted to coal firing during 2012, steaming on coal for the first time during early October 2012.
This locomotive is a Garratt, an articulated loco split into three parts. Its boiler is mounted on the centre frame, and two steam engines are mounted on separate frames, one on each end of the boiler. Articulation permits larger locomotives to negotiate curves and lighter rails that might restrict large rigid-framed locomotives. This class of locomotive are the biggest 2 foot gauge locomotives in the world
