1870's CDV portrait (both judging by the clothes and the frame) of an unknown woman. Taken in Kristianstad, Sweden.

I don't have much information about this photo - not more than that it was taken by Fichtel, located on 126 Bergen Line Avenue, Union Hill, New Jersey.
But I can make a few well-educated guesses. I think it is very likely that the two women are family, and judging by their ages, possibly mother and daughter. The photo is probably taken in the early 20th century. And they might very well be immigrants from Sweden - or at least related to some such immigrant - because I bought the photo in Sweden, and sending portraits to the old motherland was a quite common occurrence.
By the way - Bergen Line Avenue, or Bergenline Avenue as it is written today, even has its own article on Wikipedia. And Union Hill is now a part of Union City.

CDV from the 1880s of a woman with three children - taken in either Helsingborg or Simrishamn (here spelt Cimbrishamn), in Skåne, southern Sweden. They seem to be quite well off, but their clothes are quite interesting. They are all well dressed, with a white collar on the youngest boy and the girl dressed in a very fashionable, short version of a grown-up dress. But at the same time, the necklace on the woman is of very local character - the only similar one I have been able to find on-line (with known provenance) is from eastern Skåne (where Simrishamn is located, which could be an indication that the photo actually was taken there).

I posted this photo on Flickr for the first time in 2009. It is from my great-great-grandfathers photo album (he lived 1855-1959, and his son was my paternal grandmothers father). It is a lovely album (actually one in a set of two) full of photos from around 1890-1910, but there are no names. Not any. Anywhere. Must frustrating. So when I posted this photo, I had no idea where it was taken, who it was of or anything.
8 years later that has all changed. At least when it comes to this photo. I won't bore you with the detective work behind it, but just give you the facts.
This is my grandmother's cousin Kristina Saga Gooldey (I think the last is an attempt at Goldie). She was born in Nyboholm, Sweden September 24, 1916, as the only child to my great-grandfathers younger (half-)brother and his wife. They emigrated to the US in 1925. (Interestingly enough, the wife was actually born in the US, to Swedish parents, but came to Sweden when she was still a child.) The family settled in Jamestown, New York, and this photo was taken at 9 Walnut Street (the street name but not the town is written on the back - but now that I could look up the whole address on Google maps, yes it's taken in Jamestown, at that address). The doll is most likely a Christmas gift, from the first Christmas in the new country.
The text written on the back, even though it wasn't much help at the beginning of my search (especially since I'm now much better at reading old hand-writing), is quite cute and deserves quoting in whole (though, I translated it from Swedish):
"This photo was taken on January 1st, out on Walnut no 9, the year 1926. You see a black splodge that looks like a tree stump. It is our cat. The keeper and the cat were photographed before, but the cat didn't like it and he went away down the street."
