The Aulne monastery (Abbaye d'Aulne) was once a Benedictine and then a Cistercian monastery - and now it is mostly in ruins. It was founded already in 637 and came under Cistercian rule in 1147. The monastery had many ups and downs, with its last golden era in the 18th century. But the monastery was sacked by French revolutionaries in 1794 and turned to ruins.

Wooden pietà dating to the early 16th century - made of wood.

Seen in the collegiate church of St Ursmer, in the small Belgian town of Binche. The current structure dates to the 15th and 17th century - it was formerly the church of Notre Dame, but renamed in 1409 when the relics of St Ursmer were brought here and the church was made into a collegiate church, which it still remains to this day.

(here seen in tons of rain.)

This structure was built to commemorate the battle of Bastogne, in December 1944 - January 1945 and the Battle of the Bulge. The aim for the Germans was the city of Antwerpen, which they wanted to reach before the Allies had a chance to bring in further support. It was all a part of the "Battle of the Bulge", also known as "The Ardennes Offensive". The German forces of 5th Panzer Army and XLVII Panzer Corps met the American 101st Airborne Division, 10th Armored Division and 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion. It ended in an American victory - but with the loss of more than 3000 American soldiers and an unknown number of German.

In the whole of the Battle of the Bulge the official number of American casualties was 80,987, and the official German was 84,834.

This memorial is known as the Mardasson Memorial. It was built in 1950 by the Belgians to show their gratitude to the Allied troops. It is in the shape of a pentagram, with a width of 31 metres and a height of 12 metres.

This is the top of a reconstruction of a Gallo-Roman burial monument - as it would have looked like back in the day, when this area was a part of the Roman empire.

At the Archeosite - Aubechies-Beloeil, which both has a museum with many Roman finds and reconstructions of pre-historic housing, and Roman buildings which would have been found in this part of the northern Roman empire.

View in the Belgian town of Ypres. Actually the town is in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium and there the name is Ieper - but the French name of the town were made quite (in)famous during the First World War, and still more commonly used by English speakers.

The view here is of the Cloth hall (Lakenhalle van Ieper or Les Halles aux draps d'Ypres) originally built in the 13th century. The building was more or less completely destroyed in the First World War and the one now standing is a (very well done) copy of the original (built in the 1930s-60s).
