Today is the 5th anniversary of my own wedding - so I thought this would be a fitting upload. This is a bride and groom from sometime in the late 19th century (despite the lack of puffy sleeves on the woman's dress). The name is written on the back - unfortunately I have not been able to get any more biographical details on them (and the church records for Norrköping are enormous - if they even lived there, and not some village outside and they went into town to have their picture taken). And yes in the 19th century, in Sweden, it was quite normal to get married in black - the dress was then worn to church and when you otherwise needed to dress up.

CDV from the 1860s of an Italian woman named Marietta Cerabini (the name is written in ink on the back), by the photographer Alphonse Bernoud, who had studios in Livorno, Florence and Naples (both Florence and Naples written in French, or possibly English since they look the same, and not in their Italian forms: Firenze and Napoli. then again, the photographer's name sounds quite French).

Anna Margareta Thott was born July 28 1866 in Skabersjö, Skåne, Sweden and she died November 9 1917 in Stockholm. She was the daughter of Gustav Thott, who died in 1879, and Irmengard Margareta Charlotta Thott (they seem to have been distantly related, hence the same last name), who died in 1900. They had married in 1865 and had two children: Anna and her two years younger brother Fritz Gustaf Christian, who emigrated to Chicago in 1893. Anna never married, and in Stockholm she worked as a physical therapist.
I would date this photo to the late 1870's, most likely before the passing of her father.

A re-post of one of the most charming vintage photos I own - and unusual! And the winter theme is quite suitable when we have just one week left to Christmas.
This rather unusual CDV depicting two ladies dressed for winter - engaged in a snowball fight! The picture is from rural Sweden (Öland to be more precise) and shows them in a garden, dressed in skirts and jackets suitable for the winter and quite fashionable. The ensembles have matching skirts and jackets and if you look closely at the clothes you can see trimmings (most notable on the darker clad woman). They are probably quite well off - one of the signs are the little hats they are wearing - poorer women at this time would most likely not have owned something like that, they used shawls instead. The fur scarves they are wearing also hint at some money.
And yet they are involved in a snowball fight! It is not just for show either - note the white in the face and on the jacket on the lighter dressed woman, that's not a damage on the photo but snow! No wonder she doesn't look quite happy...
Probably dating to the late 19th century.
