Early 20th century portrait of four smiling young women. They are all of the same age but with rather different faces, so I think it is safe to assume that they are friends and not family.
They are dressed quite fashionably, in blouses (and skirts - because back then that really was the only alternative for women, trousers would absolutely not have been worn so we can rule that out, even when we can't see their lower bodies) and small pieces of jewelry - they all wear brooches. But I would also venture to guess that at least one or two of them, if not all, are in clothes that are home made. Or at least made very locally. But back then, that would have been very common. You would read magazines, some even including dress patterns, and then you made your own version or took it to your seamstress.
I don't know the name of any of these friendly faces, but you can't help but wish life went well for them all.
