The Powder Tower, as it is often called in English (and that equivalent in other languages) or the Powder Gate (which is what the name in Czech actually means) was built in 1475 as one of 13 gates to the medieval city of Prague, by Matěj Rejsek after plans by Peter Parler, in the Gothic style. The gate lost much of its importance when the city grew beyond the gates, and in the 17th century the tower was used as gun powder storage. It was severely damaged in 1757 by the Prussians, but restored in the 19th century.
