Ueno Park (上野公園) is one of the oldest public parks in Japan, created in 1873. The land had formerly belonged to the temple Kan'ei-ji (full name Tōeizan Kan'ei-ji Endon-in, 東叡山寛永寺円頓院), a temple closely associated with the Tokugawa family. But many of its building had been destroyed at the battle of Ueno in 1868, and after that most of the land was turned over to the city of Tokyo.

Today the park houses several museums, temples and a zoo and is one of the most popular parks in Japan, counting some 10 million visitors a year (under normal circumstances).
