CHELMSFORD
This is Chelmsford, a relatively new city, created in 2012. It has had the name City attached to it for many years due to the Cathedral and the Football Team, created in the 1920’s as Chelmsford City when we were a market town.
The images shown here are comparisons taken by the celebrated Fred Spaldings, Jr. and Sr. who took many pictures of Chelmsford and the surrounding areas. Their studio was close to the Cathedral and Shire Hall.
I think the Spaldings may have been disappointed with the modern day Chelmsford. Many of the shops are very familiar with so many towns and cities across the country. Although, if you look up to the first floor and above, you will find remnants of the old town. Architectural features, odd doors, old windows and now modern graffiti artworks adorn many of the buildings and other subways and electricity power boxes (I don’t know what they are called but I will be posting something later). However this is only my opinion and I’m sure that many people do like what they see.
This first series of comparisons are taken where Duke Street meets Tindall Street, New Street and the High Street and I cannot believe the similarity between the first two images, however the next four images couldn’t be so far apart. So much for town planning.
