Point Iroquois is located on Lake Superior in Chippewa County, Michigan to the west of the Soo Locks. It overlooks Algoma District, Ontario.

The first Point Iroquois Light Station was constructed in 1855-57; however, the structure was soon deemed inadequate. The second, and current, lighthouse was constructed in 1870, and was used continuously until it was deactivated in 1962. The structure was renovated in 1993 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario is visible in the background

In 1822, Colonel Hugh Brady established Fort Brady at Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan Territory to guard against British incursions from Canada. No further armed conflict against the British ultimately occurred in the region, and the Army ultimately abandoned the original Fort Brady. The U.S. Army re-occupied and rebuilt Fort Brady in 1866 to protect the nearby state locks and canals. In 1893, the garrison was moved uphill to a new site, known as "New" Fort Brady. The site is today a public park, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan is a lovely town located to the south of the Soo Locks where Lake Superior slowly empties into Lake Huron. It is the sister community to Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, which stands just across the locks. This Upper Peninsula town is the seat of Chippewa County.
