This Art Deco structure was built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration as a combination city hall and county courthouse. Architects from the firm of Roberts & Company designed it. The building is a contributing property to the Alexander City Commercial Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Alexander City is one of two county seats in Tallapoosa County. The other county seat is Dadeville.
