Limestone County built its courthouse on the square in historic downtown Athens in 1918-19. During the 1930s the WPA refurbished it a bit under the designs of E. B. Van Keuren Inc.
The structure is the primary property of the Athens Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
