Inaugurated in 1817 by Francis I, the first emperor of Austria (also known as Francis II, the last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) - the only Doppelkaiser (double emperor) in history - and his wife Caroline Augusta of Bavaria, empress consort of Austria.
At the time, the region of Banat, where the town of Oraviţa lies, was part of the Austrian Empire.
The name "Mihai Eminescu" is due to the fact that the Romanian national poet, Mihai Eminescu, performed here in 1868 as a prompter in Pascaly theatre troupe. Obviously, also due to the fact that the town is now in Romania.
