I broke my rule of not taking photos of dead things. I had to.
I saw 4 dead dolphins in 3 days on about 100 meters of beach. The numbers in the entire Black Sea must be staggering, I hear it's happening in Turkey as well.
This is the largest of the four animals and washed up on shore this morning, the others were probably juvenile and I don't have photos of them. They don't strand on the beach disoriented, they wash up on the beach dead and decomposing.
They say it's caused by the war in Ukraine, but I don't really buy it.
The closest place involved in this war is Snake Island, 200 km away from this beach.
The dolphins are NOT disoriented by SONAR and other noise because they don't strand on the beach alive, they are dead and decomposing when they reach the beach.
Why only dolphins? There are also sharks and sturgeons in the Black Sea which grow pretty big, but I haven't heard or seen any deaths among them.
Also, the Black Sea navies, the Russian one in particular, hold exercises regularly, explosions are nothing new in this sea and there isn't a lot of naval warfare as far as I know.
Ukraine no longer has a navy, it's only Russian ships launching missiles and Ukrainean attacks on them from land, but can't be that many explosions in the water.
Also, there is another thing going on in the Black Sea - the billion Euro coastal erosion abatement project of the Romanian Water Administration which is in charge of the Black Sea coast of Romania.
This means essentially that they dig up the bottom of the sea (with a Dutch company) and move the material on land to expand the beaches. They boasted that they would double the size of Romanian beaches this way.
Funny, they claim this is "ecological reconstruction" and the Romanian environment protection agency bought it, but they are both agencies under the same ministry.
I wonder if this has anything to do with it.
