I awoke refreshed after a deep night’s rest. Just after sunrise, I glanced out my window and saw the most beautiful, glimmering light across the chao phraya river. I quickly grabbed my camera and hopped on a long-tail boat to explore. Long-tail boats are great fun and offer a water-level view of the world, the perfect vantage point to observe this ancient city. Just after Wat Arun, we hang a sharp left and head deep into the cities canals. I wave at a Thai family brushing their teeth from their kitchen, literally 10 feet from me. Every square inch of waterfront is taken up by a home, business, or boat – flotsam and jetsam (and everything else) is piled up in front of half-sunken porches and docks, many of which are adorned with beautiful plants and small, colorful shrines. As you look closer, you are drawn into the incredible depth and detail of each frame of vision – chaotic beauty. Just then, my boat driver anxiously motions toward the nearby riverbank, where 2 giant Monitor lizards are sunning themselves near an old shipwreck. As we turn onto a smaller canal, an old monk in a small canoe paddles by, straining against the current. We continue past countless morning rituals, from the mundane to the spiritual.
