It was one of those lucky moments again...it was my first morning in the Etosha National Park and of course I immediately booked a game drive early in the morning for sunrise. After 2,5 weeks and several game drives in the country my expectations were pretty low since it was rainy season so there were plenty of waterholes and most wildlife would hide in the bushes anyway. I wasn't even mad since I really enjoyed those drives, watching whatever animal crossed our paths. We were told that the 2 lion packs in the reserve hadn't been seen for almost a week so I didn't really expect anything to say the least. I was alone on the ride and had to pay for two and my driver didn't speak much while looking for some wildlife. I was brwosing through all those shots I had taken the days before when suddenly my guide stopped the car abruptly. Looking out of the front window I couldn't see why he would have done that maneuvre...but then I let my view slowly slide to the left and I saw that pack of lions ( around 10-12 with a bunch of cubs ) standing directly next to us which almost made me fall out of the car. How convenient that the sunrise threw some pretty neat paint on the sky too and made that ride so much more enjoyable. Soon we had to leave because a bunch of other cars were arriving, skipping their actualy tour to the Pan to see the lions instead. I once more had the the right feeling to chose that very tour even if I had to pay for two :) Later that morning we returned to the spot and we met the pack again right in time for some feeding action. The lionesses obviously catched some Oryx, which was shared among the whole pack. The result is this very image here... and I love it so much!

What incredibly beautiful animals cheetahs are... reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h (though typically significantly less on average) in a sprint, these big cats are also the fastest land animals in the world. During the run, all four paws are off the ground, so the cheetah is essentially flying through the savannah. Of course, this requires energy, and many sprints of this nature over "longer" distances are not possible in a day. Therefore, the success rate in hunting must be correspondingly high, which is indeed the case with cheetahs. With their speed, they cause gazelles (their main prey) to stumble, and they kill by biting the throat (suffocation), unlike other big cats - which typically kill their prey by biting the neck (leopards/lions... tigers seem to employ both techniques). The elegance of cheetahs is unmatched among felines...

Deadvlei - Sossusvlei, Namibia, 2024
To be the first in the salt pan of Deadvlei was for sure one of the most impressive experiences I've ever made. The absolute tranquility and silence was when holding your breath is a thing I will never ever forget in my life...

Natural Arches - Spitzkoppe, Namibia, 2024
