Lydia, the daughter of my old friend Jan Galligan was set to attend Loyola in New Orleans this fall. I picked her up at the airport on Wednesday. Three days later she was headed for Shreveport with her roomate's family. She's now back in Albany, after Loyola canceled the fall semester.

Just before the power went out. There were at least 100,000 people in Baton Rouge who had fled New Orleans. Those of us at the hotel spent much of our time crowded around the television. When the power went out, the hotel brought out a tiny, battery powered portable. When the power came back on, the cable was still out. We supplied our own antennae to the hotel so that we could watch the one station that we could pick up.
